Can butane hair straighteners or butane hair curlers be taken on planes?
Some hair straighteners and curling irons have a butane cartridge. The draw here is that they're cordless, but the butane cartridge makes it a bit trickier when you're bringing your curling iron or straightener on a plane.
According to the TSA, butane hair straighteners and curling irons are not allowed in checked baggage, but are allowed in carry-on baggage as long as there is a safety cover to prevent accidental activation, as they pose a fire hazard.
Here is the exact quote from the TSAlocal:
“Cordless curling irons containing a gas cartridge and butane-powered curling irons are only allowed in carry-on baggage. A safety cover must be placed over the heating element.
The device must be protected against accidental activation. Gas refills (spare cartridges) are not allowed in checked or carry-on baggage.”
I have read that it is acceptable to separate the curling iron or cartridge from the iron, but the TSA does not mention this on their website. Keep in mind that the final decision always rests with the TSA agent.

Will your hair straightener, hair dryer and flat iron work when traveling internationally?
The voltage and style of the plug are two different things to consider when traveling to other countries.
Before you pack your bags, I have a word of caution about traveling with your favorite hair-styling device.
There may be electrical problems with the use of your device outdoors. Different parts of the world use different voltages, which means your hair dryer, straightener, and flat iron may not be compatible.

Your best bet is to buy a dual voltage appliance.
For example, the US electrical system uses 110 voltages, while the European system is 220. Having a dual voltage hair straightener means you can switch the voltage between 110 or 220, depending on where you are in the world.
Do you need a travel plug adapter? Or a voltage converter?
If you don't have a dual voltage appliance, you'll need a converter. A converter would change the voltage to avoid frying your appliance, blowing a fuse in the building, or even risking a fire.

When traveling abroad with any electrical device, you may need a plug adapter to ensure that your plug will fit your wall outlet.
For example, the US and Canada use the same plug style as Central American countries, but plugs in Europe are different. Even within Europe, the UK uses a different style of plug than most of the rest of the continent.
A plug adapter won't convert electricity, but these days most things that don't get hot will convert on their own, so your laptop and phone charger should work with just one adapter.
Any appliance that gets hot, such as a hair straightener, flat iron, or blow dryer, may not work as well, even if it's dual voltage or when using an converter. Some even have warnings that you should use the lowest setting when traveling abroad.
Look for plug adapters atamazonas.
